A WORD FROM O.C.’s JAKE T…..
When we think of the pressure that we’re put under by our friends, parents, teachers, coaches and others in our lives it can be a little bit overwhelming. Yet, in my experience, the most intense pressure often comes
from within. The desire to succeed can feel like a burden or even more so is the pressure not to fail. The neat thing is that we’re all different, and the way that people deal with pressure really defines who they are. There’s no doubt that in ones lifetime they will face many different kinds of pressure. Sometimes there is pressure to fit in, or pressure to pay
bills, or even an athletes pressure to win! What’s important to remember is that when we feel under pressure, we must rely on our strengths and not focus on our weaknesses. Each person on this planet is created with different skills, abilities, talents, and how we use those when we feel under pressure will ultimately defines us.
As a true sports enthusiast I always like to look for life lessons in sports. It’s very exciting to see which athletes can thrive under pressure and go down as heroes and which ones let the pressure get to them. The truth is two of my favorite aspects of sports are the “underdog” and the “comeback” story because they relate to life in so many ways. The thing that they both have in common is that in either situation the athletes have to look deep within themselves to achieve more than anyone expected.
My guess is that at some point in your life you’ve known what it feels like to be the underdog or the comeback kid; the one facing an uphill climb that neither others or yourself are fully sure you’re going to come through with flying colors. So the question is, how can we come through the toughest pressures that we face in every area of our life to be the best that we can be? Here are a few recommendations that I’m taking directly from athletics to
deal with the pressure on a daily basis.
1) Mentally prepare for the struggles you are going to face.
In sports it’s important to visualize what you are going to do before the game even starts. So in
life we must try to imagine the situations that we’ll be in so we are prepared for them before they happen.
2) Practice, to prepare yourself for when the pressure is on.
If you have shown the discipline to prepare yourself mentally and physically for a situation, then when it finally matters most you’ll be able to perform at your highest level.
3) Stay calm and trust yourself.
If you are prepared for what is coming, you have no reason to second guess your abilities, thoughts, or actions! So get in the game of life, make the best decisions for your future and live life to the fullest by not letting the pressure of others, yourself or the world to slow you down.
Make sure the strength to get through a pressure situation is in you!
We can all admit, that at one point or another, or maybe more than once, we have submitted ourselves to the manipulation of the media. Ever since I can remember, it was not my parents who fully taught me about my sexual health; rather other agents, such as my friends and all forms of media. I grew up listening to hip-hop, in the times when it was used as tool for empowerment, awareness, and a movement in itself but now it is a completely different story.
R. Kelly is a notorious singer for sexually explicit music and sexual deviant behavior; as we recall, he was on trial for statutory rape. His new song “Pregnant” is displayed below. After listening to this song, I could not help but to laugh at how ridiculous the song is and what it says. Media such as this has no purpose and is detrimental to the vulnerable minds of many young adults and adults in general. Nowhere, does he mention anything about a relationship, the responsibility of having a child, is only focused on the needs of a man, it stereotypes women’s role in society, condones the use of alcohol and sex, and so forth. It may be just a song to some but it does not provide a sensible outlook on the realities of pregnancy, whether you are prepared or not, it is not so simple. What do you think? Is it a classic or just more trash added to our generation’s music genre?
Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant,
Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant,
Lay your body down and get you pregnant,
Knock you up, pregnant, Knock you up
Can you believe I’m in the club with a girl who has a man,
And take her to the hotel for just a one night stand,
See I’m a playa so I ain’t tryna take her on no dates,
To much like my patron man I’m just tryna take it straight,
Until I met this girl in the club with an unbelievable booty,
Sweetest girl in the world and I mean it and on top of that she’s a cutie,
I ain’t seen nothing like her around here in a while,
And if I had a girl she’d be the one to bear my child,
Telling myself I’m a playa so I keep tryna shake it off,
But I keep on seeing this big old house with a picket fence and a dog,
Never felt nothing like this,
She’s more than a mistress enough to handle my business,
Now put that girl in my kitchen,
Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant,
That’s what I told her,
Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant,
Lay your body down and get you pregnant,
Like you are,
Knock you up, pregnant,
All the pretty ladies please line up right next to me,
How would you like to go on a little trip with your boy Tyrese,
Raise your hand if you want me to fulfill your fantasy,
I can hide your co-star and get in one of my new wiis,
Tell me what your name is,
I can make you famous,
We can pop champagne and get right down to sexing,
Now I ain’t got nothing to do tonight I gotta wait for my crew,
I just wanna put some in you,
And I can tell that you want it too,
And I’m ready babe,
And your ready babe,
So let’s go get out of this club,
Kel’s and Rys after party,
You can F*** with us,
Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant,
Girl you make me wanna get you pregnant,
Lay your body down and get you pregnant,
Knock you up, pregnant.
